The Dutch King and Queen get Acquainted with Boon Edam at The Nurturing House
Beijing, China - The Nurturing House by Next City Living Lab is an exploration of how we can be healthier and happier in our cities, looking for solutions as to how we should nurture our cities, with clean air, water, energy, and food, so that they in turn nurture our lives. As part of this showcase during the Beijing Design Week 2015, Royal Boon Edam displayed their contribution to answer such questions. A Debut During the 2015 Beijing Design Week Situated in the bustling and historic Dashilar hutong district, from 23rd September to 31st October 2015, The Nurturing House has become the home for the brightest ideas for a better future in China. The Nurturing House by Next City Living Lab marks the fifth consecutive year of The Netherlands’ participation in Beijing Design Week. Working closely with the China Building Center, this year’s public programme focuses around the theme of “Doing More with Less, Together for a Sustainable Urban Future”. Royal Boon Edam, the world leading entry expert and provider of sustainable, secure entry services exhibits their contribution with a focus on energy saving revolving doors and securing the built environment, to build a better future together: Michelle Wortel, Marketing Manager, Royal Boon Edam says: “In order to preserve the earth for future generations, we need to reconsider the way we have built our societies. Traditional buildings and building methods have a large carbon footprint and a major impact on the environment. As a family company, we find it important that our children and their children get a chance to continue our work. We are proud to be the global market leader for the most environmentally friendly entry solution available: the revolving door. But this position also gives us the responsibility to take our sustainability efforts further. Wherever possible we use recycled or recyclable materials to manufacture our entry solutions. Any waste materials are collected and recycled or disposed of by the most environmentally friendly method available.” The Royal Visit As part of the state visit of King Willem-Alexander to China, to maintain the momentum of the open and pragmatic partnership between the Netherlands and China, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima visited the Nurturing House. During this visit they got to see over twenty exhibits and meet with each of the companies involved, including Boon Edam. Additionally, King Willem-Alexander encountered the Boon Edam experience in the form of the Lifeline Speedlane Swing, the newest innovation by Boon Edam and the most intelligent speed gate on the market today. “Trimmed in orange, the Speedlane Swing definitely gave them the Royal experience they deserve”, says Michelle Wortel. Opening the Door to a Bygone Era
Boon Edam was delighted to be chosen as the main supplier for the bespoke entrance to the new ‘bygone era’ style restaurant at Fortnum & Mason based in London. The new restaurant aptly named 45 Jermyn Street is the latest addition to the high-end department store which has been successfully running since 1707. Turning Old into New Due to its old fashioned glamour and vintage beauty, the designers of this new restaurant wanted to create a lasting impression right from the start by incorporating an authentic looking entrance to this chic new eatery. As experts in the field of entrance design, Boon Edam were chosen by the restaurant designers to design, manufacture and install a traditional-style entry way which would also be fitting for the modern world. The bespoke revolving door was entirely hand made out of timber with a power assisted drive and an additional collapsible door set added to allow for the passing of bulky items and larger items of luggage. This prestigious door design was chosen by the designer for many reasons. Due to its prominent position in Piccadilly, London, the architects were tasked with creating a statement entrance piece which would also ooze a quintessential look and feel which would, in turn, blend in with the overall quintessentially English theme of the department store. The revolving door was also a first choice option as a way of overcoming the great British weather of cold winds and wet weather! Typically, a revolving door can eliminate the amount of cold air that enters a building during its use and rivals that of a more traditional swing door which lacks any control of draughts during cold spells. Experts in Design As a world leader in entry design, our client opted to work with Boon Edam Ltd whose reputation is synonymous with reliability and quality. Like Fortnum & Mason, the Boon Edam brand is long standing and internationally recognised for providing its customers with the quality workmanship that they’ve come to expect over the years. As a unique company which started life in designing wooden revolving doors back in 1873, our client knew that Boon Edam Ltd were more than experienced in this field. Having initially discussed their needs and expectations and by providing examples of previous timber based revolving doors, Boon Edam were able to easily supply the client with a design they were after. Customisation and Communication Putting our client at the forefront of this project, Boon Edam ensured that all communication was thorough throughout the entire design and manufacture stages of this project and that clear communication was continued right through to completion. By working closely with our client, we were able to ensure that all design needs were met at every step of the process. It was obvious during the early stages that certain aspects such as lead times, costs and material matching could potentially cause problems for the designer but Boon Edam helped to alleviate these concerns and kept communications open during the whole process. A unique aspect of this working relationship was the option given for the client to visit the Boon Edam factory based in the Netherlands. This gave a further opportunity for our client to view the bespoke door product as a completed product prior to it being delivered to the UK. It also gave the architects the opportunity to get a clearer idea of what was being provided and to allow for any changes that needed to be made before being dispatched. David Healy, Area Project Manager at Boon Edam Ltd said “From start to finish, liaising closely with the client and the architect, the Fortnum & Mason bespoke revolving door progressed efficiently throughout the design, manufacture and installation process. In my view, the uniqueness of this door comes down to it being manufactured from Oak in order to compliment the look of the new restaurant and to help retain its functionality required in its day-to-day use”. Due to the impeccable communication and seamless working relationship between supplier and client, the installation of this majestic product was turned around in less than 5 months, leaving both the architects and Boon Edam Ltd delighted with the results. Meeting the Needs of Southern General Hospital in Glasgow
Southern General Hospital, which serves for the South-West of Glasgow, has chosen to work closely with Boon Edam to offer their patients, staff and visitors to the hospital a welcoming and reassuring entry to their hospital. By installing a bespoke Duotour revolving door with integrated curved corridors, the entrance to the hospital not only looks aesthetically pleasing but also serves as a multi-functional entrance to the prestigious building. Users of the hospital are now able to flow more quickly and smoothly through this mobility hotspot. Serving the People of South West Glasgow As a working arm of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Southern General Hospital is a large teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of approximately 900 beds. The hospital is located in the South West of Glasgow, Scotland and provides a comprehensive range of acute and related clinical services to residents there. A Gateway to Improvement David Healy, Area Project Manager for Boon Edam UK Ltd said “We have installed the bespoke Duotour revolving door with integrated curved corridors which included 4 auto-swing pass doors for the use of disabled users. Before our involvement in the project, our client was faced with the task of finding a supplier who could meet their bespoke design requirements”. The new entrance system is a highly functional piece of equipment which compliments the overall façade of this prestigious building. Customisation and Cooperation Boon Edam has worked closely with the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Southern General Hospital since the start of the project in November 2013 to create a fully customised entry solution for this hospital. This project is totally unique as the overall structure and door arrangement was specifically designed by the company's design teams both in the UK and The Netherlands to help meet the client’s bespoke requirements. The design team working for our client chose to work with Boon Edam as they were the only revolving door manufacturer and supplier that could meet the intricate design requirements for their entrance arrangement. After several months of design work and final approval from the client, the manufacture began with a twelve week lead time. The manufacture of the product was completed and delivered on time to meet the site programme. Overall, the design and manufacture process took approximately eight months to complete and the client was satisfied with the end result.
